About a Sense of Place

It was great to see you at A Sense of Place this year. This is the (non)place to continue those conversations that started in corners, in caves, on the couch, in the garden and in the pub.

If you weren't at A Sense of Place, well, what were you thinking? The Powerpoints might be online, there might be films and reports of the goings-on but really that's not what it's about. You should have been there. The clue's in the name.

If you were there, join in the conversations here and help us keep the momentum going. Don't be shy. Contact me direct ( if you prefer. Feel free to upload your photos too. There are already some online, have a look at the A Sense of Place photos or check out the films of the days made by Scott at WeeFlee productions.

This is the group that finds ways to count the uncountable, to pin down the un-pin-downable and to evaluate the intangible. We hope to define the qualities that make for successful communities; we look for different ways of doing things; we look for ways to spend our energies wisely and productively... and soon. We look at future thinking, social and cultural capital, place-based learning, health, sustainability, inclusion and participation.

It sounds fluffy but it has a core of steel.

Nabeel Hamdi has a new book out: The Placemaker’s Guide to Building Community

If you remember Nabeel from A Sense of Place a few years back, or you have read Small Change then you may be interested in his new guide to placemaking. It is "packed with practical skills and tools that architects, planners, urban designers and other built environment specialists need in order to engage effectively with development work in any context."

Dear Sense of Place members
I would like to let you know about a conference we are holding at London South Bank University on the 11th June called 'Place Based Learning for Sustainability and Global Citizenship'
I think you would find it very interesting so do please get along if you can
Two 'Fiery Spirits' are Key Note speakers - myself and Will Coleman!
For more information go directly to: It is indeed!
I am currently managing my time between London and Exeter (have I explained that I have picked up another 0.5 job down there? - now have a full time equivalent ... just split geographically!)

The conference planning is coming on well - just need to advertise and recruit delegates
Here is the link - if you could pass around to any/all networks that would be great
or - see Education header

All the best
(and hoping to join the Group - once I've worked out how)
