series of seminars on fire, last stop 'energy', next stop 'transport' . . .

On Friday March 12th a surprisingly well attended seminar - in Buckhaven, Fife, on 'Re-energising Communities' - brought people active in Fife Council and Fife communities together to work out how to reduce energy use and power up renewables. There were some unexpected convergences between council and communities, and some unexpectedly productive clashes between people from communities that are not yet active and climate active communities.The next seminar (in a series of 4) is on Thursday…See More

3 Days of Copenhagen Talks and Walks

Along with about 45,000 other people (including Paul Allen and many other bolgistas it would seem!) I've been at the Bella Centre in Copenhagen where the main negotiations and side events have been happening in a place capable of holding only 15,000 people (see Day One below). Then I joined 100,000 folk to march on the Bella Centre to demand real action now (see Day Two below). Finally I took part in an unexpected BBC debate and in our polite fut firm Academic Seminar Blockade (Day Three below)…See More

Profile Information

Welcome! FierySpirits is for activists and professionals who are building vibrant, resilient rural communities. Tell us a little about why you'd like to join?
>
These look like just the people, the issues and the processes I am passionate about - so I'm joining you in practice rather than just in spirit (something necessitated by navigating a full time job alongside home and all the out-of-work-hours spent devoted to enabling local resilience).
>
About Me (areas of expertise/interest I can share)
>
On Saturday I will be voluntarily leaving my full time permanent (sic) post as a lecturer in social anthropology at Glasgow University to concentrate my energies on the (unpaid) work of enabling the emerging/ persisting network of local resilience initiatives to reshape the structures of the state amd market and collective mindset so that they enable sustainable communities to persist, flourish, re-emerge.

Currently I am engaged in this process at three levels:
1. Locally in Portobello through the transition initiative we began in 2007(www.pedal-porty.org.uk);
2. Nationally through the Holyrood 350 campaign (www.holyrood350.org) which last week had a full house meeting in Parliament of people from all over Scotland who are actively working to reduce their communities carbon emissions; and
3. Globally through the networks of indigenous peoples and activist anthropologists (www.forestpeoples.org and also the Crabgrass collective based on Vancouver Island, Canada) working to defuse ongoing processes of colonisation which change their name but continue the work of colonisation, exploitationand destruction of the commons and our common life begun through the enclosures, the clearances and the subsequent use of the dispossessed in the colonisation of the world.

How do we multiply our effectiveness, how do we ally with all those caught in believing change is impossible, how do we support wach other when we give up, how do we look the destruction of peoples and other beings lives in the eye, how do we dance and party and hope and care?
