Profile Information

Welcome! FierySpirits is for activists and professionals who are building vibrant, resilient rural communities. Tell us a little about why you'd like to join?
Thought it was about time I wrote a little more! I have joined this website to help Nick develop the site and encourage more people to join and participate. It has been great seeing how it has developed so far and it will be interesting to see what happens over time. I am now currenly on maternity leave (Nov 2011 to Dec 2012) and look forward to seeing how this site has developed on my return.
About Me (areas of expertise/interest I can share)
I have worked with Carnegie UK Trust for six years. The past five have been spent as the Co-ordinator of Carnegie’s Rural Programme (which has now come to a close.) It was a privilege to be part of this programme and work with Kate Braithwaite- from the beginnings of the Commission for Rural Development through to Rural Action Research Programme and now to where we are with developing this Rural Development Community of Practice. It has been quite a journey and we have met some fantastic partners on the way!!

I am now a Development Officer for Carnegie and work in their practice team along with Nick Wilding. This sits alongside the Trust’s Policy team and the Chief Executive, Martyn Evans. Over the next two years I will continue to support the CoP specifically managing the Highlands and Islands funded work in North Harris and Argyll and Bute. I will also continue to manage the contract with DCLG supporting Community Land Trusts and the growing CLT Network.

I live in a wee colony flat in Edinburgh with my husband Scott and we love getting out camping and walking in Scotland as much as we can. I come from a line of tenant farmers and was brought up on a farm in Perthshire which my mum still manages with the help of my younger brother. My husband Scott was brought up on the island of Jura where his Dad managed the distillery (now moved off the island) so we try and get across as much as we can.

Before joining Carnegie I worked in the TV and corporate media industry. Scott still works freelance in this industry and runs his own company -Wee Flee Productions. I still have a great interest in the use of media and both Scott and I are interested in the development of 'digital storytelling' and how media can be used in a rural development setting.

Off on my next adventure

Posted on October 24, 2011 at 16:07 1 Comment

When Nick asked me originally to write this I told him that I would wait a while and didn’t feel quite ready!  Now looking at less than a week and half left I suppose now it is time!  As some of you may know I am off on maternity leave on the 4th Nov (baby due early Dec.)  I am planning to take the year (as long as the baby has not got expensive tastes!!)  So this is me signing off from fieryspirits as one of the facilitators (though I am sure I will keep peeking…

Hi

Here is the latest from Community Land Scotland ...

The pace of Community Land Scotland’s work has been increased and improved by the appointment of Peter Peacock, a former MSP and Scottish Minister, to the role of Policy Director.

This has tangible results in that during the last two weeks Community Land Scotland, the membership organisation representing community land owners in Scotland, has produced two policy papers, one on the role of the Crown…

"The commitment to the principle of a…

Hi Kirsty,
I'm getting in touch as I'm trying to get in contact with community activists in Argyll and I see you're a hub for work there. The reason is that I'm working with Oxfam Scotland who are doing some research to gather the views of diverse communities as part of advocacy to Scottish government over community assets. Ultimately this will develop a Scottish Humankind Index to measure factors in living well within communities. I'd be interested in talk more to you about this and ensure that the views of rurally-based activists get represented. If that sounds good to you, add me as a friend and we can get in touch?
With thanks,
Sarah Stocks

Hi Kirsty

I'm very much looking forward to the Conference, although I'm beginning to wish I had a bit more time!  I can book you and Nick into the hotel for the extra night - not a problem.

Once I've figured out how this all works I'll be posting a wee blog update on the event Nick and Geoff were at in Harris last week.

PS. The wellies shot was taken at last year's Hebridean Celtic Festival - just before the headliners Runrig came on. I thought it looked quite "petal-ish" that's why I went for it!!

Forgot to say the new MP for Herefordshire South Jesse Norman, was the first person to mention CLt's to me over 12 months ago he invited me to a meeting with Herefordshire council staff & reps. He may be a useful guy to note for the future / invite to Eden?

Hi Kirsty

Many thanks for your kind welcome to Fiery Spirits

I had actually seen Carnegie Trust piece and had also flicked through the PDF before - all excellent stuff and completely in tune with the thoughts and ideas I've been having, so it's great to know that there is already a whole body of brilliant work to support this!

If you have any other pointers or suggestions, let me know

Thanks again

Clive

Hi Kirsty, thanks very much for your comment on my wall, it's lovely to have a personal welcome. I'm looking forward to finding out more about Fiery Spirits and all that's going on. I'm about to kick-start a (long term) campaign to promote the difference that the arts/creativity makes in people's lives, so I'll make sure to write/post/link some items here once it gets rolling. All the best, Anita.
