Hi everyone
I’m writing to let you know about the launch of a new topic group – Mapping Community Assets. This builds on the work done by members of this CoP, my colleagues at IACD, Carnegie and others, leading to the publication of ‘Appreciating Assets’. The report seems to have struck chords as well as raising questions... and quite a few people have told us they’d welcome more insights into how asset mapping happens in practice.
I'm delighted to be the new Carnegie Associate for this topic. I’ll be working over the next few months to help connect people who’re working on asset mapping, or interested in doing so. This will involve a mix of blogposts, signposting good examples and resources, and a face-to-face event in early summer. We’d like to hear your ideas about what would be most useful – so please feel free to make suggestions here, or take some time to fill in the CoP member survey, going out later today.
For now, I’m keen to hear from any of you with experiences of mapping community assets. What prompted it? What did you learn? What were the successes and challenges? Even if you haven’t done it yourself, can you recommend a really clear example (ideally a video or easy to read resource) of what community asset mapping looks and tastes like and the impact it can have?
Looking forward to working with you! Contact me via FierySpirits or at gill.musk@iacglobal.org

Comment by Gill Musk on February 3, 2012 at 17:17 Thanks for these contributions, and sorry not to have replied sooner...It's been a busy week... our 'Shaking our Assets' event on Wednesday (a collaboration of IACD and the CLD Standards Council for Scotland) attracted around 60 practitioners from around the country and seemed to press quite a few buttons. It was a great chance to explore some international and local examples of assets approaches in action, and to talk through the opportunities - and challenges - for practice. A conference report will be available soon and we hope some of the conversations will continue through this forum...
Great to hear of some other examples of asset mapping - thanks for these. Andrew, look forward to hearing how the Staffs pilot progresses and what types of community asset you might be thinking of including... Mac, Ingrid - look forward to exploring those international examples. Thanks!
Comment by Ingrid Burkett on February 3, 2012 at 16:34 Hi, I've always found the following videos from Australia helpful. They show some 'asset-mapping' in progress.
I also think it is important to remember, however, that asset mapping is only a small part of asset-approaches. This was emphasised by all speakers at the 'Shaking our Assets' event in Glasgow this week (http://www.iacdglobal.org/events/iacd-event-2012-shaking-our-assets...). Great to see some discussion happening about asset-mapping on this site - love to hear about people's experiences of moving from mapping to mobilisation! best wishes, Ingrid.
Comment by William McCaig Johnson on January 30, 2012 at 17:40 Hello,
I commend:
1.) Luther Snow (http://www.luthersnow.com/asset-mapping-title-page.html) and his book The Power of Asset Mapping . Lurther & I do some work with social-capital rich faith communities (meet weekly, are networked, raise money, can be found contributing to the early stages of many CD projects).
2.) June Holley and her Network Weaving (NW) Handbook . June has a background in rural Community Economic Development (CED), as former director of AceNet in Athens, Ohio, USA. NW is asset mapping, etc., for CED.

Hi Gill
We here at the Community Council of Staffordshire are about to embark on a pilot looking at the Community Assets Register in practice . Have 3 local authorities signed up and DCLG . Exploratory meeting mid Feb . Hoping that by the end ( 3 months maybe ) we have some good practice guides that each of the Staffordshire authorities could use and community groups as well . Would've been nice to have found some cash to help us do it but no change there .
