PART 1: The Introduction
What is this all about?
The North Harris Trust has undertaken to host a visit of young people to the island in April 2012. This is funded by the Carnegie UK Trust as part of their work to involve young people in the future of their communities, and the projects that matter to them. The Scottish Rural Network managed by SCVO also supports the trip.
What is the purpose?
We want to get young people together from across Scotland to meet each other, exchange ideas on the projects they are working on and have a good time while they are doing it. We also want their involvement in helping to plan for a major, national youth conference being planned by SCVO for June this year.
What about the fun bit?
During the day the young people will be able to take part in a range of outdoor pursuits on offer on Harris. Hill walking, beach surfing, surfing, kayaking are among some of the activities we are currently exploring. The young people from North Harris are also talking about having a beach barbeque one evening and a ceilidh/music event another night. It will be a good, fun trip in return for the ideas inspiration and involvement of your young people.
What about the work bit?
Each morning and evening we will have informal workshop sessions to exchange ideas and plan for the conference in June 2012. We know this is the holidays – and the trip will be relaxed and good fun – but the young people will be expected to take part!
PART 2: The Details
When is it?
The visit will be from Thursday 11th April to Saturday the 14th April 2012.
What are the travel arrangements?
You will arrive on the ferry from Uig on the 11th April (leaving at 14.00 and arriving at Tarbet 15.40). You will leave on the 14th April on the ferry from Tarbert (leaving at 11.40 arriving at 13.00).
You will have to make your own way to and from Uig.
How many places are available?
There are 20 places available initially to include the young people and their support workers. We may be able to increase this number.
We are looking for young people over the age of 13 but understand that some groups may have a few younger members that might want to come on the trip as part of the group.
What are the accommodation arrangements?
Initially we have booked 8 twin rooms and 4 single rooms in the Harris Hotel.
What about the money?
The Carnegie UK Trust will cover the cost of all travel, accommodation and meals for 20 participants to include adult support workers. Groups will have to cover the costs of the chosen activities (details to be agreed).
Is there a limit to numbers?
This depends on interest in the trip. A guide is likely to be 5 funded places per group. You would be welcome to self fund extra places and we would do our best to include you in all activities etc.
How about adult supervision?
The responsibility for each group will be on the individual group leaders. All groups must bring a responsible adult and cover all your own risk assessments, insurance and disclosure requirements etc. Your group can be mixed sex as long as you have adequate supervision for all your young people attending.
When will we know the final programme?
We hope to finalise the programme and arrangements by the 1st March 2012
